Awkwardness with Toby Mac

by: Charis Johnson

On Saturday night, Duffy, Jon Lantz and I got to go to Six Flags and see Toby Mac perform (tickets compliments of our great friends over at KLTY). It was a great night, awesome concert, and time of worship and reflection.

I started thinking through our history with Toby Mac - we first met him backstage at the first Celebrate Freedom aka "Mudfest 2007" (picture below),

then we got to see him again backstage at Six Flags last summer,

and again at Portland Cityfest in August 2008.

The day after Portland Cityfest we were at the airport early in the morning checking in when some guy barrelled over the top of Duffy to get to the first class ticket line. Duffy huffed and puffed and dragged our bags out of the guys way. I turned to see what the commotion was and out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse, quickly turned, and asked, "Are you Toby Mac?" A very startled and embarrassed Toby turned around as I introduced us as "Palau Festival Directors from Dallas". He stammered and stuttured a bit as he apologized to Duffy. It was awkward to say the least. His son, Truett, was with him and we got to chat for a bit before heading off to our gate. Duffy and I had a good laugh about the run-in and pushed it out of mind...until we got to our gate.

Sitting in chairs at our gate...oh yeah... Toby and Truett. What are the odds that they would be on our flight? Due to the awkwardness of the first encounter, we decided to steer clear and went to grab some pre-flight snacks. Since first class always loads first, we just knew there would be an awkward moment when we were stopped by their seats waiting to get to our own. As luck would have it, Truett was seated in first class, but the seat next to him was empty...Toby must be in the bathroom. As we continued down the aisle to our seats, we couldn't believe it...Toby was sitting directly behind us. Turns out he couldn't get 2 first class, so he let the guy beside him take his son's first class seat, and Toby spent the entire flight leaning over Duffy's seat and chatting about movies, concerts, clothes, anything you could imagine.

It was really neat to get to spend 3 hours with him, hearing his heart for ministry, where he came from, and what his passions are. To realize that he struggles with things, loses his temper in airports, and is humbled by the Lord through random encounters.

Saturday night he performed a great show in Dallas, full of off-the-cuff impromptu stunts, jokes, and conversation. He is as real on stage as he is off stage and I admire that about him.
