I’m so tired, I’m not sure why I’m not asleep. I think my eyelids are so used to being open that they forgot how to shut. I’m listening to the gurgling noises of my daughter…now a whopping 2 weeks old and 7 lbs 2 oz. Even though I know she is about to wake up and start howling to be fed any minute now, I am absolutely loving it.
I thought I’d be a blogging fool, bragging about every little thing she did, but now two weeks in to being a first time Mom to a newborn, my ideals have been effectively shattered. First of all…there’s not much a newborn does besides eat, sleep, burp, fart, poop, and throw-up. Julah is one of a kind though and has already given us a few things to laugh about.

The other day she was lying face-to-face with Duffy on the bed and they were having a little chat. He got too close and she leaned in and started sucking on his nose. Caught that on camera - such a cute video. Turns out she’s not partial to his nose alone, because a few days later I went in to give her a kiss and found her latched onto my nose.

I was holding her and Duffy walked through the room and casually waved at her and said, “Hey Julah Girl!” without missing a beat, her little hand shot up in the air and she made a waving motion at him. He died laughing at the coincidence and he tried it again. Once again, she shot that little hand up in the air and waved back at him.

I’ve gotten really good at “catching” things coming out of her. Last night, I made two great “catches”. Right before bed she’d had 4 oz of formula and we thought we were going to get a good 4 hours of sleep. I leaned in to kiss her goodnight and she gave me this panicked look. I grabbed her blanket and lifted up both corners just in time to catch all 4 ounces making a reappearance. The second “catch” happened during a #2 diaper change. I’ll let you use your imagination on that one…but as it was happening I was thinking, “I’m totally telling this story someday at your wedding little girl.”

Today, I reached the point of exhaustion that I wasn’t thinking clearly. I desperately wanted to get some things done around the house so while she was sleeping I raked the leaves out of the flower bed, ate lunch with a bite of ice cream for dessert, and did some laundry. Finally, I gave in and took a nap with her around 3pm. When I woke up, much more rested, I couldn’t believe what I done in my zombie state. I had brought the rake (with leaves still on it) into the living room, put the ice cream away in the refrigerator, and taken the clothes out of the washer and just left them sitting on top of the dryer…soaking wet. Note to self: don’t try to “accomplish” things when exhausted.

She just finished 4 oz and kept it down, so I think this is my chance to get in (prayerfully) 4 hours of sleep. So I’m off to bed!
