This has been the week of Formula Drama! In the hospital we switched her from Similac Advanced to Sensitive because she was throwing it up. Starting at 3 weeks old, Julah started throwing up again once a day and was very fussy before, during, and after feedings. She was throwing up every day and it was very curdled. The only time she wasn’t screaming at me…was when she was asleep. Poor baby - I tried everything I could. Thinking she was Lactose intolerant, we switched her to Soy. She refused to eat it. I really can’t blame her. I tasted the Similac Sensitive and it tasted like melted ice cream. I tasted the Soy Formula and it tasted like licking a chalk board.

When the Soy didn’t work, I found myself sitting on the floor at a CVS Pharmacy, head in my hands on the verge of tears. Thank the Lord for my friend, Michelle, who’s a dietician that specializes in 0-6 months of age. She told me that there are roughly two types of formula: Casein and Whey based. The Casein sometimes curdles in baby’s tummies. Julah was probably not processing the Casein very well and I should try Gerber GoodStart. We switched and while it has eliminated the curdling problem…she still is in pain and arching her back. This next week we have a plan to try a few different things, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Due to her upset tummy this week, it was rather difficult to get a good picture of her. They can’t all be perfect, right?!

This week at my Mom’s group we took a picture of some of the babies. Notice how all of the other babies are looking to the right in unison….except my baby. She’s a rebel.

Afterwards, we all went to Mi Cocina for lunch. 10 Moms and 10 baby carriers...I think we scared everyone when we walked in. They gave us the private back room :)

  1. Hey Charis,
I don't know if you remember me... I am Katie Morris, friend of Trog & Mendi. First, congratulations on your darling little girl! Mendi has told me about your story and my husband and I have prayed for this special time for you! What a blessing and answer to prayer your daughter is! Also, I just saw your blog post about your daughters upset stomach & thought I might share my very limited experience with you. My son was born on March 17 and after about a week he started spitting up and arching his back. I wondered if he had gas, and have had some success with Mylicon. I also mentioned what I was seeing with our pediatrician at an appointment and he said it could be infant reflux. We haven't started medicating him because he is still so young but we are keeping an eye on it to see if he is showing more signs and discomfort. One thing our pediatrician did encourage us to do is make sure we keep him upright for at least 15 minutes after each feeding. That has definitely helped us. I hope that gives you some more ideas of things to try and research. Congrats again! I'm sure our little ones will meet some day over at the Trogdons!

    Blessings,
    Katie Morris
