Our First Sonogram

by: Charis

All weekend I've been experiencing alot of cramping, discomfort, pain, and swelling. As it grew more intense over the weekend I became increasingly concerned that I had a tubal pregnancy. I called my Doctor on Monday morning and she came me come in for my first sonogram to check things out.

When the sonogram showed my uterus, we immediately saw a little "raisin" dead center of it. She said, "There's the baby." Then she panned over to my overies and said, "There's the problem." My ovaries were  the size of large oranges and filled with fluid. While this isn't a common problem after using fertility meds, it isn't rare. She said most of the swelling should be gone by 10 weeks, and unless they get to be the size of grapefruits, I shouldn't have to go into the hospital. It also explained why I look more like 12 weeks pregnant instead of 4...I couldn't believe how fast a little bump appeared and was getting quite worried that I would blow up 60 lbs with this pregnancy.

She had me take a blood test and my level was 1165 - high for only being 4 1/2 weeks along - and very good. I go back in next Tuesday for my second sonogram to check the progress of everything. While she can't quite yet rule out a tubal pregnancy, she said she highly doubted that was the case since she saw a baby had implanted in the uterus. The enlarged ovaries explained away the pain and I have no other symptoms.

Praise God! It gave me so much relief to understand why I was in so much discomfort. I'm also hoping that since the little baby is growing so fast, we might get to see him more clearly next week...maybe even a heartbeat!

Yes...I did say "him". I'm convinced it's a boy and until a sonogram proves me wrong - I'm sticking with my prediction.

Week 4: Baby Johnson is the size of a poppy seed! In week 4, now safe in your womb, the ball of cells (blastocyst) splits in two, becoming the embryo and the placenta. The amniotic sac and fluid are forming around baby, and will act as a cushion for the next eight months.
